Define arterial blood pressure (BP) and explain how it is measured
What will be an ideal response?
• Blood pressure is the measure of resistance of blood flow against the walls of the arterial vessels and is measured using a stethoscope and sphygmomanometer.
• The sphygmomanometer is inflated to a pressure greater than arterial pressure during systole, completely obstructing blood flow.
• As pressure is released from the sphygmomanometer, blood pressure falls to the systolic pressure, resulting in the first sound heard through the stethoscope.
• When this sound (a distinct beat) first disappears, this is the diastolic pressure.
• Units of pressure are usually in millimeters of mercury (mmHg).
