Your friend, Max, has confided that he wants to begin online dating in hopes of finding a serious relationship and has come to you for advice. Using the information you learned in this chapter, what do you think Max should know about online dating relationships? Include information and tips for safety and forming healthy relationships.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: May include some or all of these points:
Online daters have more opportunity to evaluate different partners, but this can lead to two-dimensional interpretations and objectification. People do not always put time into relationships to get through awkwardness. Algorithms do not have scientific backing. About 1 in 4 online daters are just looking for fun, so Max should be clear about his goals. Depending on Max’s age (20s vs 40s and older) people in his age group may use apps more (younger) or websites more (older). Most people who use the Internet support it as a good way to meet people. About 30% of online daters, though, have met someone who lied to them or made them uncomfortable. Males who date online are often more focused on attractiveness vs women who are more focused on interpersonal communication. Marriages that begin online are slightly less likely to divorce and slightly more satisfied in their marriages. Online daters are worried about lies, sexual risks, sexual violence, emotional risks, and dangerous people. Max may want to try warranting his dates and limit his self-disclosure until he knows more about the person.
