Chyron and Marty completed Deutsch's Conflict Orientation Scale. Chyron's score indicates that he has a destructive conflict orientation, while Marty's score reveals his constructive conflict orientation
What are two or three behaviors that they each might exhibit in conflict situations?
What will be an ideal response?
• Chyron: His score is low, indicating a destructive conflict orientation. He probably does all he can to "win" in a conflict, which disconfirms the other person. He may insult the other, attacking her intelligence or character. He may yell and scream, or even attack physically in a conflict. Consequently, the other person probably distances him- or herself from Chyron, perpetuating further destruction in the relationship.
• Marty: His score is high, indicating a constructive conflict orientation. He probably does all he can to understand the other person's goals in a conflict, which confirms the other. He is open and friendly, viewing the conflict as a shared problem. He is careful not to attack the other's intelligence when he critiques his ideas and does all he can not to attack the other's self-image. Consequently, the other person probably feels valued by Marty, continuing a constructive relationship.
