Know the main elements of the seven research methods: surveys, participant observation, case studies, secondary analysis, analysis of documents, experiments, and unobtrusive measures.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Surveys: Narrow your population. Select a sample to represent your population accurately. Ask neutral questions so respondents can answer with their own opinions. Decide whether to use open ended questions or closed-ended questions. Establish a Rapport with the respondents, especially when asking about sensitive topics that elicit embarrassment, shame or other negative emotions.
Participant observation: the researcher participates in the research setting while observing what is happening in the setting. Ex: Campus has a crisis intervention center, you might be able to observe victims of spouse abuse from the time they report the attack through their participation in counseling.
Case Studies: the researcher focuses on a single event, situation or individual; its purpose is to understand the dynamics of relationships and power or even the thinking that motivates people.
Secondary Analysis: analyzing data that someone else has already collected
Analysis of Documents~ to investigate social life, they examine such diverse sources such as books, newspapers, diaries, bank. Records, police reports, immigration files, and records kept by organization.
Experiments: Experiments allow us to determine cause and effect.
Unobtrusive Measures~ ways to observe people who are not aware that they are being studied. The basic principle of unobtrusive measures: to record the behavior of people in public settings, such as a crowd, without announcing that you are doing so is acceptable. Doing this in private is not.
