Teachers need to understand that the idea of voting is abstract to young children. It may be difficult for them to only vote once and to consider how to make that choice. Children can vote in a variety of ways, tally marks on a T chart, moveable pictures of themselves, or recording a choice on paper to place in a box, there are many ways to cast a vote. Teachers should also avoid "elections" that pit children against each other. Young children will be faced with hurt feelings if they are not deemed the "winner". Voting for young children should be about favorite foods, colors, animals, and so on.
