Students would follow a similar procedure when working problems containing zeros in both the tens and hundreds columns. For example, in 3002 – 89 = , students would be taught to treat the 3 thousands as 300 tens. They would take 1 ten from the 300 tens, cross out the 300, and replace it with 299.
