Describe the strategy for teaching students to rename when zeros are involved

What will be an ideal response?

The basic strategy students are taught for renaming when zeros are involved is to rename several digits at once. For example, in the problem 304 – 87 = , students are taught to treat the 3 hundreds as 30 tens. They then take 1 ten from the 30 tens. 30 is crossed out and replaced with 29. Students would follow a similar procedure when working problems containing zeros in both the tens and hundreds columns. For example, in 3002 – 89 = , students would be taught to treat the 3 thousands as 300 tens. They would take 1 ten from the 300 tens, cross out the 300, and replace it with 299.
