Describe the current practices for dealing with spent fuel rods
What will be an ideal response?
Spent fuel rods are placed in storage pools to decay in an environment that dissipates the continuing heat from the rods and prevents the escape of radiation. After a decade of such storage, more than 90% of the radioactivity is lost and dry storage is safer. Rods are then stored in dry casks awaiting transfer to their final burial in impervious rock. The final storage locations are frequently debated and thus much of our spent fuel is currently located in temporary storage casks.
