Give an example of how you would approach designing a classroom for infants and toddlers. What types of equipment and/or activity areas or learning centers would you include?

What will be an ideal response?

Safety and cleanliness are the biggest concerns for infants and toddlers. These areas must also be responsive to infant's and toddler's needs. For example, infants spend lots of time sleeping, eating, and toileting, so areas for infants might include changing tables, cribs, and quiet areas. Toddlers who are mobile need larger spaces to move around. Activities for toddlers might also include play areas, music, construction and blocks, sand and water play areas, and so on. An example of what students may recommend includes play areas that stimulate the five senses such as a toy area that uses light up or musical toys that infants and toddlers can manipulate with their hands and feet. Any toys that can stimulate exploration through sight, sound, or touch are recommended (e.g., toys that light up or make sounds when certain buttons are pushed or strings are pulled). Other considerations are tables that serve as both play tables and eating tables for toddlers. Toddlers can be seated at the table (typically a cutout seat in the table with appropriate back support) to play games or to eat meals. This type of equipment helps teachers focus lessons with the children, but also allows for easier monitoring of all children in the learning environment. Both eating and playing can occur around the table.
