Explain why it is difficult for the police to change citizens’ attitudes toward the police.

What will be an ideal response?

Research would seem to suggest that it is difficult to change citizens’ attitudes toward the police, because citizens’ perceptions of police seldom change over time. One study found that citizens who rated the police favorably or unfavorably, held those same attitudes 6 months later, regardless of whether or not they had contact with the police, and regardless of their evaluation of the police during their contact. In addition, preexisting attitudes regarding the police largely influenced subsequent evaluations of the police. As such, it would appear that citizens’ interactions with the police have little influence on citizens’ attitudes toward the police.
