A profession is an occupation, the practice of which is based upon an understanding of the theoretical makeup of some area of learning, accompanied by demonstrated abilities when applying this understanding.
Commonly accepted attributes of a profession:
• Knowledge — specialized knowledge needed to help achieve purpose.
• Competent application — usually some examination or internship to assure competence.
• Social responsibility — higher purpose to be achieved by practicing the occupation.
• Self-control — generally a group prepares and follows a code of ethics.
• Community sanction — general community belief that the effort is professional.
