List and briefly define the five types of interpersonal conflict. Show in your definitions how they clearly differ from one another
What will be an ideal response?
1. Parallel conflict: Exists when the disagreement is evident or objectively based and is understood accurately by both people involved. Example: We conflict about you being late; your lateness is not in debate.
2. Displaced conflict: Exists when the actual conflict issue is not discussed or perceptions of the actual issue are off base. Example: Because you are late, we conflict about you not caring about me and my needs.
3. Misattributed conflict: Exists when both parties incorrectly attribute the conflict to a person, event, or behavior. Example: We conflict about the dog hiding my shoe, when the shoe is actually where I left it, unseen by me.
4. Latent conflict: Exists when one or both parties consistently avoid an actual conflict, and let it fester instead. Example: I have asked my partner to close the toilet lid after using the bathroom, but he still doesn't do it. I'm angry and bothered each time, but I don't confront him about it.
5. False conflict: Exists when the people involved in the conflict misunderstand what has created it or what the conflict topic actually is. Example: We're mad at our neighbor for putting up a "Private Property" sign on our property line. We think it's done to spite us, but in reality it's there to legally protect them if anyone trespasses in their pool.
