Secondary teachers expect adolescent learners to be proficient in independently performing three types of school learning tasks. (a) Identify three types of required school learning tasks faced by adolescent learners. (b) For each task, identify at least one characteristic of many learners with mild disabilities that might interfere with their ability to perform that task independently

What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
(a) Acquiring information independently by studying and note-taking
Devising ways to remember information
Demonstrating competence using complex written formats on assignments and tests

(b) Studying independently can be compromised by deficits in reading comprehension. Note-taking is impeded by inefficient listening skills coupled with lack of fluency in handwriting. These learners also find it difficult to perform two complex functions at the same time. The cognitive capacity used to comprehend information auditorially detracts from the capacity to formulate the written response.

Storing large amounts of new material in the long-term memory is difficult because these learners often lack a repertoire of memory strategies, restricting their ability to reliably select the best one for a particular task. Storage is also hindered by lack of strength in prerequisite learning.

Written expression presents problems in all five language skill areas: spelling accuracy and fluency of handwriting; a vocabulary large enough to express complex thoughts; accurate syntax; organizational strategies for paragraphs and larger works that facilitate communication; the ability to assess the task demands and to provide the teacher with the desired response.

In recent years some educators have spoken of the need to align educational practice with "brain research." To a considerable degree, they speak of the first few years of life as being a sensitive period for brain development, in large part because synaptogenesis, synaptic pruning, and myelination occur during this time. Respond to their line of reasoning by answering the following questions: a

What roles do synaptogenesis, synaptic pruning, and myelination each play in brain development? b. To what extent are these processes exclusive to the first five years of life? c. Do any or all of these processes limit what children can learn once they reach age 5 or 6? If so, in what way(s)? If not, why not? What will be an ideal response?
