Describe factors that influence the development of autobiographical memory, and explain why these memories become more common and more detailed after about the age of 3½.
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal answer should include:
1. Maturation of brain structures such as the hippocampus in the second year set the stage for the formation of permanent episodic memories.
2. Children appear to find it more difficult to remember experiences that were not verbally encoded into memory. The development of vocabulary that allows them to encode events verbally leads to better recall of those events at a later time.
3. The tendency to form mental scripts for familiar events helps young children form a generalized representation (so that they recall what one does at story time, for example), but weakens autobiographical memories (so they may forget what happened at a particular story time).
4. Adults who quiz children on what happened to them help them build narratives.
5. Increasing skill in forming and recounting memory narratives leads to the biggest advances in autobiographical memory after age 3½.
