Briefly explain the Domain Name System (DNS)

What will be an ideal response?

The Domain Name System provides a way of accessing remote resources without the need for knowing the numeric IP address of the resource. Domain names are resolved to IP addresses by use of "name servers." These name servers take the entered domain name, perform a database query, and then return the IP address for that domain name. This assumes, of course, that a valid domain name was entered. Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and some organizations, maintain their own DNS servers. Changes made to these servers are then propagated throughout the Internet. The DNS name space is based on a concept of "domains" with a hierarchical structure similar to a directory tree, or tree structure, in a file system. At the top of the hierarchy is the Root with domains and subdomains that flow down from the root.
The original DNS name space assigned seven top-level domains:
com for commercial use
edu for educational institutions
gov for formal governmental institutions
int for international organizations
mil for military applications
net for networking organization
org for not-for-profit organizations
