With an ever-increasing number of people getting their news online and via social networks, why does this diverse and fluid field of media consumption represent challenges and opportunities as well as dangers for the public relations profession?

What will be an ideal response?

These environments provide opportunities to deliver content directly to specific publics without concern for geographical boundaries or the need to place a news item with traditional media for it to be disseminated. However, there are drawbacks; most critically the standards required in the traditional press release can loosen without a “gatekeeper” to check facts and format. What goes out on the Web and in social networks may not have the rigor, clarity, and veracity of carefully vetted information. Yet, with the evolution of digital and social media, the PR writer benefits from access to forms of distribution that allow for reaching more people, more frequently, and at less cost. It’s essential that professional standards are maintained in this cornucopia of media to ensure your organization is well represented with clear, accurate, and concise writing that communicates credibility.
