Journals—and all writing—can be a very personal activity. Often, adolescents and adults lack confidence in their writing products. Thus, it is recommended that instructors promote nonthreatening practices when responding to and grading students' personal thoughts in journals. What specific practices support a nonthreatening approach to grading and evaluating student journals?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Students should list all of the following: protect privacy, respond actively and sincerely, be honest in the response, look for positives, keep journal writing special and interesting, don't make promises you cannot keep.
