When learning to play some sports such as tennis, golf, or baseball, often you are told to follow through with your swing. Explain why follow through is important.
What will be an ideal response?
In the case of golf, the ball has an initial velocity of zero, and when striking the ball,
you are attempting to give the ball a relatively high velocity when it leaves your
club. You can achieve your goal by increasing the time of contact between the club and the ball. When you follow through with your swing, you are increasing the time of contact. The longer the
time of contact, the higher the velocity of ball. Of course, we are assuming the same
magnitude of force is applied throughout the swing.
In the case of base ball or tennis, the ball has an initial velocity and in addition to
giving the ball a high velocity as it leaves the bat or the tennis racquet, you are
changing the direction of the velocity of the ball as well. However, when you
follow through with your swing, you are still increasing the time of contact.
