Describe the five major steps of the Vocabulary Acquisition model

What will be an ideal response?

The first of the five major steps of the Vocabulary Acquisition model is to pretest knowledge of words that are critical to content via vocabulary "word-mapping" or simple multiple-choice tests, under low-stress circumstances. The second step in this model is to provide students with opportunity to engage with and practice using the word being studied to deepen their understanding of it. The third step is to explore the meaning patterns in examining related words, antonyms, synonyms, etc. to recognize any similarities and differences. The fourth step is to engage students in studying and using the vocabulary word in context to in practicing a meaningful exchange about ideas – communicating like ‘experts.' Finally, the fifth step is to assess students' understanding of the vocabulary – particularly their deep understanding and application of new vocabulary words, beyond mere memorization of definitions.
