Defend or refute: The United States is a “nation that reads.”

What will be an ideal response?

For the most part, students should be able to refute this statement. The adult illiteracy rate is high in comparison to that in other developed countries, the high school drop-out rate is high, and it has been found that people watch a large amount of television. Each of these supports a conclusion that reading is not done as frequently as it could or should be done. It can also be noted that new forms of technology such as i-pods, cell phones, and internet availability are consuming increasing amounts of time in people’s lives, thus reducing the time that could be devoted to reading.
