Briefly discuss the events that occur during the first stage of labor
What will be an ideal response?
During the first stage of labor, uterine contractions occur approximately every 30 minutes, becoming greater in intensity and duration. Cervical dilation progresses from 0 to 5 cm, and effacement progresses from 0 to 50%. Rupture of the membranes (ROM) also occurs during this stage and releases amniotic fluid. It takes 8—20 hours of labor for the cervix to completely dilate to 10 cm and 100% effacement. At this point, the second stage of labor begins.
