Differentiate between the two types of refractory periods. As part of your answer, make sure to include why both of these processes exist.
What will be an ideal response?
Once the voltage-dependent sodium channels have been activated, they cannot be opened a second time until the membrane is repolarized to nearly resting levels. This interval, in which no stimulus whatsoever can produce another action potential, is known as the absolute refractory period. While the cell is relatively hyperpolarized following an action potential, it can respond, but only to larger than normal input. We refer to this period as the relative refractory period. The refractory periods exist due to the physical limitations of the ion channels functioning to allow an action potential to occur.
