Ninety-two-year-old Mrs James is accompanied by her daughter, Jayne, at a pre-admission consultation for cataract surgery. Jayne states that her mother has dementia and that she developed a VTE following a hip replacement 2 years previously.
What will be an ideal response?

Answer:
Document as per unit protocol to ensure that this information is communicated to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Ensure that Jane will be available to accompany her mother on the day of surgery to alleviate the added stress for Mrs James.
Contact the operating theatre team leader to arrange for Jane to stay with her mother throughout the procedure.
Order an ECG and blood test and measure Mrs James for anti-embolism stockings, to reduce the risk of a further VTE.
Educate Jane on the importance of assisting her mother with leg/foot exercises as soon as possible after the procedure and the necessity to mobilise as soon as it is safe to do so.
