Explain the importance of power and the importance of ?.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Power is the probability of correctly rejecting the null hypothesis. If we are to conduct significance tests, it is important to have high power; it is pointless to run a significance test when there is a low probability of correctly rejecting the null hypothesis. The importance of power draws attention to the importance of ?, which is the difference between two population means in units of standard deviation. To determine the sample size required to achieve a desired level of power, one has to know what effect size would be of interest. That is, we cannot run experiments with high power without knowing what ? would be interesting.
