Given the advantages associated with integrative bargaining, why is it so difficult to get collective bargaining partners to use it?

What will be an ideal response?

It can be difficult to move bargaining partners toward an integrative approach for several reasons. First, the U.S. has a long history of adversarial labor relations and distributive bargaining. Introducing a new method requires changing habits and stereotypes. Many people simply assume that negotiations is about splitting a fixed pie, without questioning whether another approach might result in a bigger pie. Second, integrative bargaining requires a different skills set than distributive bargaining. Both parties need training and skill development for integrative bargaining to be successful. Third, the theatrical aspects of negotiations often work against an integrative approach. If the parties are trying to convince their audience that they are, for example, taking a tough stance, they may engage in behaviors that are not consistent with an integrative approach. If they do not do so, they may be perceived as "soft" or "selling out" to the opposing party.
