Define trait and situational anxiety. Have you experienced either or both when giving a

speech, or do you expect to experience them when speaking in communication class? Describe
three techniques for reducing nervousness that are most likely to be

effective for you.
What will be an ideal response?

Trait anxiety is caused by internal feelings. Situational anxiety is caused by new,
different, or unexpected situations. These are techniques for managing anxiety: be prepared,
engage in skills training, use positive imagery, enjoy deep breathing and relaxation, apply
cognitive restructuring, become audience-centered, and practice speaking often.
