Hegemony does not refer simply to the domination of one group by another, but
indicates the process by which one group actively supports the goals and aspirations of
another, dominant group, even though those goals may not be in the subordinate group's
best interest. (Mumby, 1988, p. 55) The key to the concept of hegemony is the idea that
the subordinated group actively supports the interests of the dominant group, often
unknowingly, which results in oppression. The subordinated group is actively
participating in the maintenance of the dominant group's ideology.
