What do defendants need to prove in order to use the defense of justification?

What will be an ideal response?

"Kill or be killed" is the idea behind the self-defense exception to the ban on taking the law into your own hands. But defendants can avoid conviction only if they can prove three conditions existed at the time they fought back.

1.They did not provoke the attack.
2.They reasonably believed the attack was going to happen right then (it was imminent).
3.They used only enough force necessary to repel the attack.
The third condition points to two unacceptable reasons for taking the law into your own hands:
1.Preemptive strikes. To prevent future attacks, such as killing someone who is going to kill you next week
2.Retaliation. To pay back someone who tried to kill you last week
Preemptive strikes and retaliation are always the government's business, never private individuals.
