Define a (molecular) probe and describe its use to identify a specific nucleic acid sequence

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: A probe is a single-stranded polynucleotide (DNA or RNA) that is labeled for detection in some way, such as a radiolabel or fluorescent label. It must be complementary to the (single-stranded) target sequence of interest so that it will hybridize to the target, and the presence of the target is revealed by the label.
