How could dairy products reduce the effectiveness of antimicrobial drugs and why is this a major concern these days?


Dairy products may prevent the absorption of antimicrobial drugs that are used to help rid the body of an infection caused by a bacterial species like Streptococcus or Staphylococcus. The concern about an interaction between dairy products and antimicrobial drugs is that many people consume a high level of dairy products each day. Also, many disease-causing bacteria are becoming resistant to antimicrobial drugs. This means that a person with an infection caused by a Staphylococcus bacterium may not be able to get rid of the infection with antimicrobial drugs. Bacterial species become resistant to antimicrobial drugs if exposed to them at low levels for a period of time. Somebody taking antimicrobial drugs and consuming a lot of dairy products may be diluting the drugs in their body and giving the bacteria a chance to resist the drug.
