Tom Kestel and Olivia Denton were found in the teacher's cafeteria sharing their most recently developed teaching units. Each claimed they had developed an integrated unit. Tom stated that his fifth grade students were doing a unit on sources of pollution around the school. His students were mapping the school grounds, measuring area, collecting trash, examining the water quality of the stream

that went through the school land lab, researching the history of the land the school was developed upon, and writing letters to members of the community sharing their findings and offering solutions on how to eliminate pollution sources. Olivia said that she gave her fifth grade students the following question to solve, "How did humans change the environment around the school over time?" She stated that her students were divided into six investigation teams of four students each. Each team took a different approach to solve the problem, yet she required all to identify which mathematics, social studies, language arts, and science concepts they used to solve that problem. Which teacher best understands what it means to create an integrated teaching unit? A) Tom, because he used an across the standards approach to create his integrated unit. B) Tom, because he identified a key concept and the children examined the concept from each of the disciplines.
