Hugh and Rebecca are having a baby. They are considering having Hugh be a stay-at-home father, while Rebecca works full-time. Do you have any concerns about this? If they were to ask your opinion about this arrangement, what would you say?
What will be an ideal response?
The answer might reflect some of the societal concerns about such an arrangement.
The answer should, however, recognize that there is no reason why a stay-at-home
father cannot care for the child equally as well as the mother. If, however, the father
only interacts with the child in the traditional "fatherly" way, then this might have
negative consequences on the child's development. For example, fathers typically
engage in a lot of interactive and sometimes competitive play time with their
children, while mothers tend to teach during play time. It is important that both of
these types of activities be present.
