Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of using control groups in research studies on children in early intervention programs

What will be an ideal response?

The advantages of using control groups in early intervention/education studies is that control groups give us a base line for comparison. That is, participants in the control group and the treatment group are considered similar in terms of delays, disabilities, and so on, prior to the onset of the study/intervention. The control group does not receive any treatment or intervention, and thus any changes between the control group and the treatment group are likely the result of interventions/education given to the treatment group. Disadvantages of control groups is that those in the control group do not benefit from early intervention/education, which poses ethical dilemmas in these studies. The ethical dilemma, of course, is that some children are intentionally provided service and support, while other children in need of services and support are not afforded them.
