Initially, the students focus on setting up the number-family diagrams and do not solve the problems. After students have mastered writing the values into the number-family diagrams, they are taught how to analyze the language in other multiplication and division problems and to create corresponding number-family diagrams. After the students master writing number-family diagrams, they are asked to solve the problems.
