Why are some interconnection schemes good for small networks and others for large networks, but none are optimal for all networks?

A multiprocessor’s interconnection scheme affects the system’s performance, cost and
reliability. What will be an ideal response?

Some interconnection schemes are optimized for small systems. For example, a crossbar-switch matrix thoroughly connects the system’s nodes, but this is impractical for large-scale systems due to cost. Likewise, a shared bus is fast for small systems but becomes saturated on larger systems. Schemes built to scale to large-scale systems are not optimized for the specific case of a few processors (e.g., multistage networks), so it would not make sense to use these schemes in small networks.
