Sharpe identified five different formats of teacher talk. The first format is recasting in which a teacher changes the child's words into words that are more appropriate for the situation. An example of recasting would be when the child says "toy" and the teacher reframes this word as "Want Legos or dolls." Another format of teacher talk is repeating in which the teacher simply restates what the child has said. For example, if a child says "I want to go to the park," the teacher would simply say "You want to go to the park." A third format of teacher talk is expanding in which the teacher or adult adds on to a statement that the child makes. For example, if the child says "I want to go," the teacher may expand on this statement by saying "You want to go to the store." A fourth format of teacher talk is questioning in which the teacher initiates a turn-taking conversation by asking an open-ended question. For example, the child's teacher may ask "What did you build?" This question is structured in a way that requires the child to formulate an answer that is more than one word. It requires the child to explain what they have built in detail. The last format of teacher talk is prompting in which a teacher or an adult provides specific cues or prompts to the child. For example, a teacher may prompt a child with autism spectrum disorder to communicate with his peers during snack time by saying "Jimmy, your friend asked you what your favorite color is."
