Why must the adaptive immune system develop a capacity to discriminate between foreign antigens and host antigens?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: Because all macromolecules in the host are potential antigens, the host immune system must avoid recognizing host macromolecules. If the host immune system recognizes host macromolecules, antibodies or T cells would damage them.
