The major ways of measuring performance of students in social studies include standardized testing, curriculum-based measurement (CBM), performance measures, rubrics, and various student-centered assessment techniques. Standardized, norm-referenced group achievement tests are given to students at specific grade levels. Curriculum are generally teacher-made, non-standardized tests that relate closely to the actual curriculum to which students based measures are being exposed. Performance assessments “typically focus on the process of solving problems or completing complex tasks. A rubric assessment refers to the use of specific guidelines to help navigate the grading of the student’s work. A teacher may use analytic rubrics that outline specific criteria to determine the level of a student’s performance. Other assessment techniques include:
• Portfolio assessment implies the accumulation of student products to reflect their performance.
• Journals- resources for students to use their written languages skills. In journals, students are able to write in depth about a particular concept or era that they have been studying.
• Interviews, self-evaluation question, and think-alouds.
