How have intranets and the Internet affected supervisory communication?

Increasingly, supervisors use electronically linked computer networks within their organization (intranets) and external to their organization (the Internet) to access and transfer information, and, importantly, to communicate through e-mail. Advances in voice communication technology have also considerably affected supervisory communication. Regardless of location, cellular phones enable a supervisor to keep in touch with employees and others. Digital pagers accomplish the same. Voicemail enables supervisors to leave and hear recorded voice messages. Teleconferences enable communication with people in different locations simultaneously; videoconferences provide the additional benefit of visual communication.
