Explain how coatings may be affected by chemical exposure.
What will be an ideal response?
In some situations, coatings are affected by chemical fumes, solutions, and reactions. Chemical fumes are generated by many sources, including power plants and automobile emissions. Sea water, oils, solvents, and other chemical solutions impact heavily on coatings. Soluble alkaline salts in mortar and concrete can dissolve and crystallize on the surface, damaging the coating. This is called efflorescence. Sealants may react unfavorably, and rust may streak a coating surface. Wood knots heavy with resin may bleed through a coating. These and other possible reactions must be carefully considered before choosing a coatingmaterial.?
