Why is it important to tell your doctor or surgeon about your consumption of leafy green vegetables?
Green leafy vegetables contain high levels of Vitamin K, which can increase blood clotting. If a person needs a drug such as Coumadin, Vitamin K consumption can counteract the effects of this drug. Many people take Coumadin to reduce their risk of developing blood clots or having a stroke. If they consume leafy green vegetables, their dosage of Coumadin may not be high enough to prevent the formation of clots. A surgeon may need to know about your consumption of leafy green vegetables if there is concern about excessive blood clotting that could interfere with wound healing.
