With the patient's weight in mind, what other considerations should be taken into account when setting up the instrumentation? Provide the rationale for your answers
You are assigned to a general surgery theatre where the cases for the day are being performed laparoscopically. Mrs Young, a 44 year-old female, is booked on the emergency list for a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Mrs Young weighs 110 kg.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Laparoscopically: consider longer trocar and cannula for ports (bariatric ports), possibly bariatric instruments too. If these are not stocked on the hospital's shelves, they can be ordered through your medical representative. The surgeon may wish to use a Nathanson liver retractor, which is used for laparoscopic work, specifically the liver. In this case it may be of benefit as the gall bladder is posterior to the liver.
