Identify and explain the three principles teachers should follow when using media to support young children’s learning.

What will be an ideal response?

Teachers should follow three principles for using media to support young children’s learning: (1) Choose your goal, then choose your medium; (2) Choose media designed for how children learn; and (3) Choose media that motivate interaction. First, early childhood educators need to consider the learning goals they have “and then determine whether and which media support those goals better than other available pedagogical tools”. In other words, technology should be used only when there is a clear and compelling reason to use it. Second, teachers should choose technologies that are designed with children’s development and learning in mind. Examples include using repetition, integrating instructions and provision of feedback, and avoiding distracting content. Third, teachers should choose technologies that encourage children’s interactions with the medium as well as interactions with each other and with adults.
