Planning has always been considered an important function of management. How is strategic planning different from traditional planning?
What will be an ideal response?
Traditional planning focused basically on achieving a firm’s goal in any way that seemed possible. The decision made to achieve these goals rested on subjective or intuitive assessments of the environment without regard to the interaction of one decision upon others. Strategic planning first considers the purpose of the corporation and the course that should be taken to achieve the designated purpose. Goals are then formulated based on the purpose, and all decisions are made to realize the goals. Further, planning was traditionally oriented toward the completion of some well-defined event or activity by a specific date. Strategic planning, on the other hand, is the formulation of long-term goals and objectives for the company and the selection of strategies to achieve these goals and objectives in the light of an uncertain external environment in which the firm must operate.
