What issues are associated with accumulation of ice on wind-turbine structures?
What will be an ideal response?
Ice accumulation on wind turbine blades will increase aerodynamic drag which leads to a reduction in output power. The buildup in ice can also create structural issues due to the increase in weight. A build up of ice over the blade leading edge may weigh 1,000 pounds or more. Being struck by falling ice can cause serious injury or death. A hard hat is no match for 100 pounds of ice falling a couple hundred feet.
