K.W. calls the clinic several days later complaining of having "the flu." She says that she has been nauseated and vomited once during the night. She says she has had two loose stools

On questioning, she
states that she does have a few chills and might have a low-grade fever but does not have a thermometer
to check her temperature. She states she did not check her glucose level this morning or take her insulin
because she has "not eaten."
Describe the instructions that you need to give K.W. regarding the management of her illness
and DM.

K.W. needs to immediately check her blood glucose level and obtain a urine ketone sample.
Depending on the glucose level, she should administer half of the prescribed sliding scale of the
lispro (Humalog). After that, she should monitor her glucose level every 2 to 3 hours throughout the
day. She should call back at specific times during the day to review blood glucose results and allow
you to make further adjustments in her insulin doses and monitor her condition. Encourage K.W. to
drink fluids at least hourly in small amounts. She can take over-the-counter (OTC) medications to
control the flu symptoms. She should rest and keep warm. Ideally, someone should be with her in
case of an emergency.
