They are the classical school, the positive school, and the conflict school. The classical school is based on the idea that individuals choose to engage in crime. To change behavior people need to know through law the definitions of criminal behavior and the punishment associated with the act. The positive school recognizes that the causes of crime can be seen from biological, psychological, and sociological viewpoints. If the cause of crime can be isolated, a cure can be found to alter behavior. The conflict school views law as the means by which the ruling class maintains its control.
