Technology, especially information and communication technology, is changing the manner in which businesses create and capture value, how and where we work, and how we interact and communicate. Cloud and mobile computing, big data and machine learning, sensors and intelligent manufacturing, advanced robotics and drones, and clean-energy technologies are transforming the very foundations of global business and the organizations that drive them. They have enabled workers to decide where they work, when they work, and in some cases, even how they accomplish the work. Although technology is surely not the answer to all people-related business issues, it is critical to recognize how prevalent it is and the high expectations that employees, job candidates, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders have that it will operate well. With respect to training, employees can take a course on nearly any subject online without leaving their desks, couch, or coffee shop. Indeed, the trend toward consumer-centric learning puts employees, not training departments, in charge. Dynamic learning opportunities that fit individual needs and schedules are rapidly becoming the norm.
