Compare and contrast the ‘trait’ and ‘behavioural’ approaches to leadership.
What will be an ideal response?
An acceptable answer will demonstrate an understanding of the origins of both the trait and behavioural approaches. The student should show that they understand the key arguments underlying the trait school, mainly that leaders are born with certain traits and the student can identify the seven major traits (e.g. honesty, intelligence, empathy etc); and that the behavioural school is primarily concerned with observable behaviours – especially those centered around a concern for people and a concern for task. A better answer will critique the lack of research support of the trait approach, and highlight problems in the behavioural school.
