What can a teacher do to administer traditional spelling tests more effectively?

What will be an ideal response?

Although spelling tests may be part of your language arts curriculum, do not focus too heavily on scores. Some children can score 100 percent on a spelling test but misspell the same words in their journals if you do not help them make the connections to actual writing. Spelling tests are best used to inform instruction rather than merely to grade students. With student learning in mind, use tests strategically. If a pre-test is given, how will that change your instruction? Do posttests need to include every word from a spelling list every week? Could a sampling of words from several lists be used instead? Could students of differing abilities be held accountable for only some of the words on the list? Self-corrected tests can be more effective than teacher- or peer-corrected tests. When looking at retention of word spellings, the most effective form of self-correction may come directly after each word is presented and spelled, rather than after all the words are given.
