Briefly describe May’s stages of development.

What will be an ideal response?

Innocence is the pre-egoic, pre-self-conscious stage of an infant. The innocent stage is premoral meaning neither good nor bad. The innocent is only doing what a person must do. However, an innocent does have a certain amount of will in that there is a drive to fulfill a person’s needs. Rebellion is the childhood and adolescent stage of forming an ego. This self-consciousness occurs as a result of a contrast with adults. The rebellious adolescent or child wishes freedom, but does not have a complete understanding of the responsibility that carries. Ordinary is the stage associated with the normal adult ego, noncreative, conventional, and taking no risks. Adults learn to be responsible, but experience it as too demanding, and pursue refuge in conformity. Creative represents the stage where we find the authentic adult who has moved past the ego to the existential stage of self-actualizing. This is the individual who, accepting his or her destiny, faces anxiety with courage.
